Ryan joined to us at the start of this year coming from a traditional joinery background wanting to learn the ways of solid timber. He is in his 3rd year of his apprenticeship and will be finishing up his studies soooon. Half woodworker - half rock and roll shredlord. Lover of cats and chill vibes.

What's your favourite type of timber to work with — and why?

Tasmanian Blackwood - Love the grain & colour variety


What is your favourite part of woodworking?

You never stop learning no matter how long you do it.


Which project are you most proud of so far?

The wine rack from earlier this year. So many individual that all came together perfectly.

What’s the biggest stuff-up you’ve made on a job, and what did you learn from it?

Drilling I sink hole way off centre because I can measure. Measure twice cut once.


What’s your favourite tool in the workshop?

Router/trimmer


If you could build anything, with no budget or time limits, what would it be?

A Blackwood record cabinet with some aged brass features, maybe some inlay. Would love a tambour door somewhere too.


Favourite sporting team?

Detroit Red Wings

What advice would you give someone just starting out in woodworking?

Take in all the advice & tips you can get. Never stop learning & always learn from your mistakes.


What do you enjoy most about being part of Common Wood?

Good crew. We have a wide variety of projects that we get to work on which keeps things fresh and interesting. I get to push my learning and skills.
