Buy Local - We're All Neighbours

ree

You’ve probably heard the whole “buy local” thing a million times, but it’s not just a catchy slogan for market stalls and coffee cups. It actually makes a huge difference—not just for small businesses, but for your community and even Mother Nature.

Here’s why I think it is worth skipping the big chains every now and then and backing the locals instead. Now I say this a lot. I am no expert. Feel free to yell at me if i'm wrong.

You’re Helping Real People

When you buy from a local business, you’re putting money straight into the hands of people who actually live near you—not some giant company on the other side of the world. That means you’re helping pay wages, rent, and bills for your neighbours, not lining the pockets of faceless corporations. I say "your neighbours" but I really mean - small businesses/farmers from around Australia. We're all neighbours.

It Keeps Your Community Strong

Local businesses are the ones who pitch in for the school fundraiser, attend community events, sponsor the local sports team, and actually care about what’s happening around town. When they do well, the whole community does well.

The Quality’s Better

Whether it’s fresh fruit from the farmers’ market or a piece of handmade furniture, local is always fresher, sturdier, and made with more care. It’s not churned out by the thousands—it’s grown/made properly, with pride. I bet we've all had piece of fruit or some eggs from a farmers market and yelled out loud "holy shit that is good". Maybe that is just me?

It’s Kinder to the Planet

Buying local cuts out all those extra miles from shipping and trucking things halfway across the world. Less transport = less pollution. Here at Common Wood only use recycled and sustainably sourced Australian hardwoods so the timber doesn’t travel halfway across the globe to get to your living room. It’s a greener way to shop—without even trying.

It Keeps Things Interesting

Local businesses give your community its character. Imagine if every street was filled with the same old chain stores—it’d be boring as fuuuuuck. Supporting locals keeps things unique and full of personality.

The Bottom Line

Buying local isn’t just about the product you’re getting—it’s about the ripple effect your choice has. You’re backing people, keeping your community buzzing, and helping the planet out along the way. Plus, you usually end up with something way better anyway. Don't take it from me. Go buy something locally produced be that from a growers market, a design fair or an Australian furniture builder, wink wink, and see the difference yourself.
